INSURANCE CLAIMS & COMPLIANCE

Standard home and business insurance covers damage from a sudden electrical fault — a fire or short caused by a failure — but it generally doesn’t cover the cost of bringing old wiring up to code simply because it’s outdated. Where insurance does matter is after an incident, or at renewal: insurers increasingly ask for evidence your electrical system is compliant, and a claim connected to wiring that was already known to be faulty can be harder to pursue.

Every rewire or switchboard upgrade we complete comes with a Certificate of Compliance — the documentation your insurer, conveyancer or auditor will ask for, whether you’re settling a claim, renewing a policy, selling a property, or closing out a council or WorkSafe inspection.

What We Wire

Switchboards

A switchboard is the central point where incoming power is distributed and protected across every circuit in a property, through the main switch, circuit breakers and safety switches (RCDs). Many older switchboards still run on ceramic fuses with no RCD protection at all — a genuine fire and shock risk, and one of the most common reasons an insurance claim, property sale or compliance inspection stalls.

  • Full switchboard replacement and upgrades, residential and commercial
  • RCD/safety switch retrofits for boards with partial or no protection
  • Compliance certification for insurance, sale or audit purposes

Light Circuits

Light circuits carry a smaller, steady load to fixed lighting, kept separate from general power points so a fault in one doesn't take down the other. In older properties, lighting is often still run on ageing, unprotected wiring with no dedicated RCD — usually one of the first gaps found during a rewire assessment.

  • New and replacement lighting circuits, RCD-protected to current standards
  • LED and smart lighting circuit upgrades

3-Phase Circuits

Three-phase power delivers electricity across three alternating current lines instead of one, giving far higher and more stable capacity than a standard single-phase supply. It's used wherever equipment draws heavy, continuous load — industrial machinery, commercial kitchens, large air conditioning plant and EV fleet charging — and needs purpose-built switchboards and circuit protection to match.

  • 3-phase switchboard installation and upgrades
  • Heavy machinery and commercial kitchen circuit installation
  • Load assessment before adding new 3-phase equipment

15A Circuits

A 15-amp circuit is a heavier-duty power circuit than the standard 10-amp general power point, built with larger cable and a matching outlet, for appliances that draw more current than a standard socket safely allows. Common uses include larger air conditioners, welding equipment, caravans and workshop tools.

  • New 15A circuit and outlet installation
  • Workshop, garage and caravan power upgrades

Dedicated Heater & Heat Pump Circuits

Electric heaters and heat pump hot water systems draw a continuous, high-current load that a shared general power circuit isn't built to handle safely. A dedicated circuit — its own cable run and breaker sized specifically to the appliance — prevents overload, nuisance tripping, and the fire risk of running a high-draw appliance off a shared circuit.

  • Dedicated circuits for heat pump hot water systems
  • Dedicated circuits for panel heaters, in-slab heating and other fixed electric heating

Spa Circuits

Spas and hot tubs sit in a classified wet zone under the Australian Wiring Rules, with strict requirements for RCD protection, equipotential bonding, and minimum separation distances between the spa and any switchboard, socket or metering equipment. Getting this wrong isn't just a compliance issue — water and electricity in close proximity is a genuine shock hazard.

  • New spa and hot tub circuit installation, wired and bonded to AS/NZS 3000
  • Compliance assessment for existing spa installations

Sauna Circuits & Wiring

Sauna heaters draw a serious, sustained electrical load and must be hardwired to a dedicated circuit sized to the heater's exact rating — never run off a shared socket or extension lead. The circuit needs correctly rated RCD/RCBO protection and proper earthing, checked against the heater manufacturer's specific electrical requirements.

  • Dedicated hardwired sauna circuits, matched to heater specifications
  • Traditional and infrared sauna electrical installation

WHAT GOES WRONG IF THIS ISN'T DONE

Old switchboard left in place — ceramic fuses and missing RCD protection mean a fault that should trip safely instead becomes a fire risk or shock hazard — and it’s one of the most common reasons an insurance claim or property sale gets held up.

Rewiring skipped during a renovation — walls get closed up over ageing cable that’s now far more expensive and disruptive to replace later, and any new appliances added afterwards may be running on circuits never designed for the extra load.

Spa or sauna wired without a dedicated circuit — the appliance either nuisance-trips a shared circuit, or worse, overloads wiring not rated for a sustained high-current load — a genuine fire risk, and grounds for a manufacturer’s warranty to be voided.

3-phase load added without an assessment — new equipment can overload an existing switchboard not sized for it, causing nuisance tripping, damaged equipment, or unplanned downtime on a production line.

Heat pump or heater run off a shared circuit — the circuit is more likely to trip under sustained load, and in the worst case, overheats — a fire risk this dedicated-circuit requirement exists specifically to prevent.

Example Situations

Residential — Insurance Claim After a Switchboard Fire

Situation

A homeowner's ceramic-fuse switchboard failed and caused a small fire, and the insurer required a full compliance upgrade before approving the claim and reconnecting power.

Response

Same-day assessment, full switchboard replacement with RCD protection, and a Certificate of Compliance issued directly to the insurer.

Outcome

Claim processed without further delay, and the home now meets current safety standards.

Home Renovation — Spa & Sauna Addition

Situation

A homeowner renovating their backyard wanted to add both a spa and an infrared sauna, but the existing switchboard had no spare capacity or dedicated circuits for either.

Response

Switchboard capacity assessed and upgraded, with two new dedicated, correctly bonded and RCD-protected circuits installed for the spa and sauna before landscaping was completed.

Outcome

Both installations passed compliance inspection first time, with documentation kept for the homeowner's insurer.

Sporting Club — Growing Clubhouse Demand

Situation

A community sporting club's decades-old switchboard couldn't support new commercial catering equipment and upgraded field lighting without constant nuisance tripping.

Response

Staged switchboard upgrade completed around the club's training and match schedule, adding 3-phase capacity for the kitchen and dedicated circuits for the new lighting.

Outcome

No further tripping, and the club now has documented compliance ahead of its next community grant application.

Industrial Site — Switchboard Nearing End of Life

Situation

A manufacturing site's ageing main switchboard was flagged during a WorkSafe audit as a compliance risk, with growing concern about unplanned downtime.

Response

Full load assessment, shutdown-coordinated switchboard replacement, and thermal imaging baseline established for ongoing monitoring.

Outcome

Audit finding closed out, with documentation provided for the site's compliance records.

FAQ: Rewiring & Switchboards

Usually not for wear-and-tear or outdated wiring — insurance typically covers damage from a sudden electrical fault, not the cost of bringing old wiring up to current standards. We can help you understand what applies to your situation.

Yes — every switchboard upgrade or rewire we complete comes with a Certificate of Compliance, which your insurer, conveyancer or auditor may require.

In most cases yes — a dedicated circuit can usually be added from the existing switchboard, provided there’s spare capacity. We’ll assess this as part of the quote.

Yes — for schools, sporting clubs and other occupied facilities, we schedule switchboard and rewiring work around holidays, after hours or staged around your calendar to minimise disruption.

Frequent tripping, ceramic fuses, no RCD protection, or planning a renovation, spa, sauna or new heavy-load appliance are the most common triggers — we can assess and advise the same day.
